SA Police made the announcement Wednesday and will continue to monitor outback roads, as further rainfall in the coming days could further deteriorate road conditions.
The Department of Infrastructure and Transport have shut off 40 roads, including the Birdsville Track, Marree to Birdsville, Qld, Oodnadatta Track, Marree to Marla, William Creek Road, William Creek to Coober Pedy, and Strezlecki Track, Lyndhurst to Innamincka.
A Department for Infrastructure and Transport spokesperson said roads would remain closed for the safety of road users in the region.
"Conditions have eased today but some roads are expected to remain wet for the next few days, with water ponded on the road and some soft sections particularly on the road shoulder," they said.
The spokesperson said the department had engaged closely with pastoralists across the state to understand the condition of unsealed roads.
"The department understands these closures can cause delays and inconvenience for residents, travellers and those working in the region.
"Maintenance teams are working hard to assess and re-open outback roads as soon as possible, being mindful to ensure the safety of all road users and our staff, and limit any damage to the road surface."
It is not envisaged road closures will be in place for an extended period of time but the department encouraged pastoralists to reach out to dit.north@sa.gov.au if they have access concerns.
"Road users are advised to check the local weather, latest road closures and warnings prior to travel, ensuring to avoid closed roads and always drive to the conditions," they said.
Travelers planning to drive in these areas or are attending the Big Red Bash from July 4-6 are asked to either postpone or reconsider their travel routes and refer to the DIT website for the most update information.
